Final Days of Vancouver Firefighters Coat Drive

The Vancouver Fire Department and Vancouver Firefighters Union will wrap up their annual winter coat drive, as they accept donations through December 19. In addition to winter coats, Vancouver firefighters are also requesting donations of new, unopened personal hygiene products, such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

This year, firefighters partnered with the 45th Columbia River Scouts and America’s Self Storage to collect and distribute the donated coats to local children through several charitable organizations.

Lansverk Honored for 50 Years of Service

The School of Piano Technology for the Blind will honor outgoing board member Duane Lansverk for his 50 years of service to the organization at an open house reception. Sponsored by Landerholm, P.S., the event will be held this Thursday, December 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the school which is located at 2510 E Evergreen Blvd.

“Duane has always been a driving force behind the school, in terms of both time and treasure,” said Board President, Kim Capeloto. “His contributions to the school over the last 50 years are simply too numerous to list, but his input and support can be seen in every aspect of the school.”

Flapjack Breakfast for the Explorers Program

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has the distinction of hosting one of the largest Law Enforcement Explorer Posts in Washington. These programs are filled with 15-21 year-olds who have a drive and desire to be the next generation of law enforcement.

Someday, you might need their help. Today, they need yours. The Explorers are funded almost entirely through donations, and they are now looking to raise funds that will carry them through the coming year for uniforms, equipment, and academy scholarships. Join them for the Flapjack Fundraiser, this Saturday at the Applebee’s on NE 112th Avenue.

Rocksolid Hires New Executive Director

The Rocksolid Community Teen Center recently announced the hiring of their new Executive Director, Eddie Allen. For the past year and half, Eddie has been the Development Coordinator at The Gardner School of Arts & Sciences. Prior to Gardner, Eddie has been involved with fundraising and cause marketing efforts with numerous nonprofits in the area including FISH, Humane Society of SW Washington, Dream Big, Gifford Pinchot Task Force, NW Association for Blind Athletes, Share, and Equality SW Washington.

Explore Lewis and Clark with Camas-Washougal Historical Society

Step back in time with the Camas-Washougal Historical Society as they welcome local historian Tom Wilson, presenting his talk “Elk, Salt, and a Monstrous Fish: Lewis and Clark on the Lower Columbia,” on Saturday, November 21, at 2pm, at the Camas Police Department community room (the meeting is here due to the Two Rivers Heritage Museum facility being closed through March for major work, including changes to displays).

The PowerPoint presentation will focus on the roughly four months that Lewis and Clark spent near the mouth of the Columbia River. Wilson will be dressed in period clothing and bring a variety of replica items that were used on the expedition.

Lough Legacy Veterans Parade Celebration

The Fort Vancouver National Trust will host the Annual Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver presented by the Lough Legacy on Saturday, November 7. The parade begins at 11:00AM, rain or shine. This year marks the 29th anniversary of the community celebration honoring Veterans of all service branches.

The ceremony preceding the parade, beginning at 10:00 AM on the Marshall House lawn, will feature keynote speaker Colonel Paul Fitzgerald, Commander of the 142d Fighter Wing, Oregon Air National Guard, Portland, Oregon. Col. Fitzgerald leads over 1,000 personnel in the execution of the F-15 Eagle Aerospace Control Alert mission defending the Pacific Northwest, worldwide deployments supporting national objectives, and domestic operations activities as directed by the Governor. He is a command pilot with over 2,600 flight hours in F-15 A-D fighter aircraft, and is a member of the National Guard Association of the United States and the Allied Pilots Association of American Airlines.

Make a Difference Day 2015

You probably already make a difference somehow, somewhere, to someone every day, but here’s a chance to do so with a bunch of other committed community members.

Here are a couple of activities and ways you can participate in make a Difference Day here locally.

Clark Public Utilities Stream Team

Volunteers are invited to join Clark Public Utilities Stream Team to celebrate the annual Make a Difference Day, October 24th, 2015 with stream-side tree planting, entertainment, and refreshments. The event will be held rain or shine, and will kick-off with a coordinated planting effort, followed by a celebration of volunteer efforts and annual service awards. On-site training, tools, and trees will be provided.

A Symbol of Freedom 2015

The 2015 “Symbol of Freedom” event, present by local non-profit organization CDM Services, welcomes Special Guest former P.O.W. Jessica Lynch.

The Symbol of Freedom event is a two event series, designed to increase awareness of CDM Caregiving Services, an organization that has been doing business in Southwest Washington for over 35 years. These events are centered around Veterans Day to provide a great opportunity to recognize and honor local veterans. This years special guest speaker is Jessica Lynch, the former Army soldier who was rescued as a prisoner of war in Iraq in 2003.

Award Reception to Honor Clark County’s First Citizen of 2015

Nan Henriksen will be honored during Clark County’s 75th Annual First Citizen Award Ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The event will open with a social hour featuring an array of beverages and hors d’oeuvres. A formal award presentation with elements representing Henriksen’s varied roles and contributions in Clark County will follow.

Columbia River Mental Health Unveils New Hazel Dell Clinic with Open House Reception

Community members are invited to attend the open house reception on October 8 from 5-7:00 pm for the new Columbia River Mental Health Service clinic located at 9105 Hwy 99 in Hazel Dell. The new clinic expands mental health treatment services to west Clark County and will focus on providing services to neighborhoods with a history of limited behavioral health options.

The event will provide light refreshments and is free and open to all community members. Guests will be able to take tours of the clinic, meet clinical and support staff and learn about offered services.

Battle Ground Public Safety Complex Named for Local Leader Ganley

The Battle Ground City Council recently passed a resolution naming the Battle Ground fire and police stations the William J. Ganley Public Safety Complex. This distinct honor recognizes Councilmember Bill Ganley for his extraordinary leadership in service to the Battle Ground community.

Known to thousands of students and parents, Mr. Ganley dedicated over 30 years to his profession as a teacher and coach at Battle Ground and Summit View High Schools. He served as Battle Ground’s first Mayor under the council-manager form of government from 1997 – 2001 and consistently advocates for public safety as the first priority of the City of Battle Ground.

30 Days 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge

September is the 11th Annual National Preparedness Month, which means that public safety agencies are busy working on a number of events to ensure that their communities are educated, informed and ready to face any type of crisis situation. This year’s national theme is “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.”

This year, the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency (CRESA) will help you take action as they launch the sixth year of the online social media game called the ’30 Days, 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge’ which has its own website at www.30days30ways.com.

Riverview Answers Battle Ground Police Call for Help

It is usually the other way around, but on this particular day it was the Battle Ground Police Department that placed a call for help. Their collection of teddy bears stored at the police department was ruined when water leaked into the storage room. These were not just any teddy bears, they were meant to provide comfort to children in times of crisis.

Officers often encounter children who have been in car accidents, have suffered abuse, or who have witnessed traumatic events. The gift of a stuffed animal provides these children with a level of comfort, a type of emotional first aid, and it helps build a bridge of trust between an officer and a hurting child.

Dewey Decimal Pizza Party

Part of the 80 for 80 Campaign to Help Fund the New Ridgefield Library. The Friends of the Ridgefield Library are hosting a pizza party on Saturday July 11, 2015 from 6-10 pm to benefit the building fund of the new Ridgefield Library.

It will be held at a 10 acre farm in Ridgefield, and the pizzas will be made on site and baked in a hand made pizza oven. Guests are invited to order their own pizza toppings, so each one will be unique.

To follow a library theme, the party is being called the Dewey Decimal Pizza Party. There will be outdoor games

Christmas in July Toy Drive

Keep the Christmas Spirit Going. The NE Hazel Dell Neighborhood Association in partnership with Three Creeks Community Partners is holding a “Christmas in July” toy drive and collecting toys for children in need early this year!

Help Klineline Kids Fishing Derby Success Story Continue

You may remember our post about that fantastic, fun kids event this past April, the Klineline Kids Fishing Derby. Well, we’re back to report it was a rousing success!

Harmony Sports Complex Upgrades to Allow for Expanded Soccer Play

Two new synthetic fields opened Friday at Harmony Sports Complex in east Vancouver, allowing year-round use by youth and young adult soccer players.

Washington Timbers secured financing to convert two former grass fields to synthetic turf and add field lights and fencing. Lights still need to be installed. The Washington Timbers serves about 3,500 soccer players, ages 5 to 19. The vast majority of players live in Clark County.

Heroes Night Honoring All Those that Serve

Join the East Vancouver Costco on Saturday, June 27th, from 6:30-9PM, for their 2nd Annual Heroes night.

Come and celebrate as they honor the Heroes in our community – Police, Fire Fighters, EMT’s, Doctors, Nurses, active and retired Military. The event is designed to raise awareness of the CMAC (the Community Military Appreciated Committee), which dispersed donations among organizations that care for Military and their families in need in the community.

Costco will be open to the public that evening (no Costco membership needed) and will have door prizes and activities for kids. Plus, it’s air-conditioned in there! :)

Nan Henriksen Named 2015 First Citizen

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington convened a selection committee of community leaders and past First Citizens to review a number of worthy nominations for Clark County’s 2015 First Citizen Award, and recently announced that retired businesswoman and public servant, Nan Henriksen, was selected as Clark County’s First Citizen for 2015. The First Citizen Award recognizes a Clark County resident who has modeled exemplary citizenship through their actions and service to the community.

Her nomination focused heavily on her career in public service, where she worked collaboratively to realize a shared community vision for Camas. Her efforts shaped the economic fabric of greater Clark County, bringing both people and prosperity to the region. More recently, Henriksen applied her leadership, advocacy and diplomacy to help form a county home-rule charter that reshaped local government.

5th Annual Jobs Fair Hosted by Jaime Herrera-Beutler

U.S. Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler announced that she will be hosting her fifth annual Southwest Washington Jobs Fair, as part of two events for local job-seekers.

The first, a job hunting workshop, will be held on June 2nd at the Vancouver Community Library (901 C Street, Vancouver) from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and will include local human resource specialists. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion as well as individual one-on-one counseling. The panel will discuss resume building, interviewing skills, networking, and other important aspects of the job-seeking process.

The Jobs Fair will be held on June 8th at the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay (100 Columbia Street, Vancouver) from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and will include employers from a variety of industries seeking qualified candidates.

Community Foundation Annual Awards Luncheon

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington is hosting its 2015 Annual Luncheon on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The event will begin with some social time before transitioning into the lunch and awards presentation from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The awards ceremony will honor Bob and Sharon Lewis, the 2015 Philanthropists of the Year, for their transformational financial contributions and community service.
