Clark County Government Launches New Website

Visitors to the Clark County website should notice a big change since the updated site debuted last week. The renovation brings a fresh, new look and an upgraded platform to make the site easier to use and maintain. Navigation is organized to increase the focus on tasks users need to complete or services they wish to receive. For example, if residents need Animal Control, they will no longer need to search the A-Z index or know that Community Development provides that service. Just click “Services” or “How do I…” on the main menu for a convenient list of tasks and services.

Final Days of Vancouver Firefighters Coat Drive

The Vancouver Fire Department and Vancouver Firefighters Union will wrap up their annual winter coat drive, as they accept donations through December 19. In addition to winter coats, Vancouver firefighters are also requesting donations of new, unopened personal hygiene products, such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

This year, firefighters partnered with the 45th Columbia River Scouts and America’s Self Storage to collect and distribute the donated coats to local children through several charitable organizations.

Flapjack Breakfast for the Explorers Program

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has the distinction of hosting one of the largest Law Enforcement Explorer Posts in Washington. These programs are filled with 15-21 year-olds who have a drive and desire to be the next generation of law enforcement.

Someday, you might need their help. Today, they need yours. The Explorers are funded almost entirely through donations, and they are now looking to raise funds that will carry them through the coming year for uniforms, equipment, and academy scholarships. Join them for the Flapjack Fundraiser, this Saturday at the Applebee’s on NE 112th Avenue.

Handmade Quilts Benefit the Children’s Justice Center

The Clark County Quilters – a local non-profit group with nearly 500 members – will be selling their handmade quilts of all sizes at a benefit auction, the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Children’s Justice Center (CJC).

The Children’s Justice Center provides a safe and supportive place for child victims of abuse crimes. The center’s multidisciplinary response team comes together from across a network of agencies, medical establishments and community-based agencies to provide a comprehensive response that includes supportive and healing services, while investigators and prosecutors effectively identify and hold perpetrators of the abuse in our neighborhoods accountable for their crimes against children.

Fort Vancouver Visitor Center Grand Re-Opening

The final touches are underway, everything from signage to stories have been updated. And this weekend, the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Visitor Center at 1501 E Evergreen Blvd. will celebrate its grand Re-Opening.

This special event will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2015, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This free opening will provide the public with their first look inside the remodeled 1961 facility, which has been closed for over a year during renovations. There will be refreshments and live music by the Vancouver Community Concert Band at the event. This grand opening coincides with the kickoff of the National Park Service’s Centennial celebrations, and updates the facility to better serve the local community, visitors , and educational groups.

Rural Growth Plan Alternatives Seek Public Input

Clark County has scheduled two public meetings to introduce the proposed rural growth plan alternative.

The public meetings are scheduled to provide information and request citizen feedback on a newly revised proposal for the rural component of the next growth management plan. The meetings are to be held in an open-house format, and are scheduled for the following dates and times:

Citizen Volunteers, NOW time is Now

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is hosting an informational meeting for the NOW (Neighbors on Watch) Citizen Volunteer program on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the West Precinct (Public Safety Complex) located at 505 NW 179th Street, just west of the Fairgrounds.

NOW volunteers receive specialized training and patrol in pairs throughout the county looking for suspicious activity in areas where property crimes are frequent, attend community events, and participate in other assignments as needed.

Award Reception to Honor Clark County’s First Citizen of 2015

Nan Henriksen will be honored during Clark County’s 75th Annual First Citizen Award Ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The event will open with a social hour featuring an array of beverages and hors d’oeuvres. A formal award presentation with elements representing Henriksen’s varied roles and contributions in Clark County will follow.

Free Pumpkin Harvest Festival in Downtown Washougal

Local families are invited to wear their Halloween costumes and pick out their very own FREE pumpkins at the Downtown Washougal Pumpkin Harvest Festival on Wednesday, October 21, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Reflection Plaza.

Ripe orange pumpkins ready for carving will be harvested from the City garden plot behind Washougal City Hall for the event. Adding to the fun and community participation, students from Alisa Vail’s first grade class at Gause Elementary worked to start the plant seedlings. Gause principal, Rex Larson, helped to coordinate the effort. City Council members and volunteers then planted and cared for the growing pumpkins to ensure a good harvest in time for the event.

Community Foundation Grant Spurs Marine Park Improvements

Thanks to community donations and volunteers, Vancouver’s Marine Park received a much-needed facelift over the summer. The City of Vancouver invites the community to join them in the park on Sept. 25 to officially recognize and thank the businesses and partners that made this project possible.

The recognition event begins at 12 p.m. in Marine Park in the park shelter, located on Southeast Marine Park Way, next to the Water Resources Education Center.

The Marine Park improvement project was paid for with a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington. The grant was made possible thanks to a donation from the Shirley and Jim Johnson Charitable Fund. With those funds and the volunteer efforts of members from the Southwest Washington Contractors Association (SWCA), 13 picnic tables were removed and replaced, a drinking fountain was added and landscaping repairs were made in the park.

Battle Ground Public Safety Complex Named for Local Leader Ganley

The Battle Ground City Council recently passed a resolution naming the Battle Ground fire and police stations the William J. Ganley Public Safety Complex. This distinct honor recognizes Councilmember Bill Ganley for his extraordinary leadership in service to the Battle Ground community.

Known to thousands of students and parents, Mr. Ganley dedicated over 30 years to his profession as a teacher and coach at Battle Ground and Summit View High Schools. He served as Battle Ground’s first Mayor under the council-manager form of government from 1997 – 2001 and consistently advocates for public safety as the first priority of the City of Battle Ground.

30 Days 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge

September is the 11th Annual National Preparedness Month, which means that public safety agencies are busy working on a number of events to ensure that their communities are educated, informed and ready to face any type of crisis situation. This year’s national theme is “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.”

This year, the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency (CRESA) will help you take action as they launch the sixth year of the online social media game called the ’30 Days, 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge’ which has its own website at www.30days30ways.com.
