We are surrounded in Clark County by so much rich history, especially at the local favorite location of Fort Vancouver.
On July 21st and July 22nd, 2017, you will get a chance to travel back in time for a weekend highlighting nearly 100 years of local military history…and it is FREE.
Friday will kick off the weekend with the World War II Encampment from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Costumed living history volunteers from the 113th Cavalry Living History Group will bring to life wartime at the Vancouver Barracks. This portion of the weekend will continue on Saturday.
Be sure to check out some rare World War II equipment and vehicles that will be a part of the encampment.
And if you are seeking a bit of adventure, you will have the opportunity (there is a cost for this activity) to fly like a warbird in a “1942 Cessna T50 “Bamboo Bomber”. More information on this aircraft and the company can be found online at www.adventureflight.net.
On Saturday plan for a full day of fun at the Fort.
From 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, the 1st Oregon Volunteer Infantry will show you what a Civil War Era Encampment looked like during the 1860s.
At 1:00 pm, don’t miss a unique talk given by author Daniel Sharfstein at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center.
He will discuss his new book, “Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard, and the Nez Perce War.” Sharfstein’s work illuminates one of the most enduring and tragic struggles in American history.
At 6:00 pm you are invited to step back in time to watch a Vintage Baseball Game played by the rules of the 1860s.
Costumed volunteers will portray two of the Pacific Northwest’s earliest baseball teams: the Sherman Base Ball Club (consisting of Vancouver Barracks soldiers) and the Occidental Base Ball Club of the City of Vancouver. Vancouver’s Mayor Pro Tem, Anne McEnerny-Ogle, will throw the first pitch.
So mark your calendar and bring the family out for two days of military history fun at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
