Vancouver Barracks Hosts Community’s Largest Memorial Day Event

hey! sharing is caring :)

Memorial Day to some signifies the beginning of summer. It is a day off from work and an opportunity to get together with friends or family and enjoy the change of the season. However, this day is a special observance, especially for many residents here in Clark County. This federal holiday, which originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the soldiers who died in the Civil War, honors all Americans who have died while in the military service.

This year on May 26th, the Community Military Appreciation Committee will present the communities largest Memorial Day event at the Vancouver Barracks. The ceremony will take place at the Clark County Veterans Memorial (along Fort Vancouver Way) at 11:00 am. This years event is sponsored by Waste Connections.

The original Veterans Memorial was located at the Clark County Courthouse. However several years ago it was discovered that names were missing from that memorial. The original memorial as small and was not handicap accessible. The Clark County Veterans Memorial Advisory Committee was formed, including members from the 40 et 8, Chuck Jones and Coleah I. Penley-Ayers, to design, fundraise and research the records for a new Veterans Memorial. The new monument was constructed in 1998. Today the memorial honors more than 500 local service members who died defending our country.  In addition the names of 10 Clark County soldiers and Marines who have fallen since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks are inscribed on the memorial along with the names of fallen comrades from other wars.

At the Memorial Day ceremony, Col. Richard W. Wedan will serve as keynote speaker. Wedan is commander of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Fighter Wing, based in Portland. Other speakers will include Tracy Fortmann (superintendent of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site), Lt. Col. JD Litton (90th Brigade, Armed Forces Reserve Center) U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, and Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt.

So while you plan out your extended weekend of activities with friends and family, consider attending this event and honor those that have given their lives for this country’s freedom.
