Remembering the Buffalo Soldiers

hey! sharing is caring :)

In honor of Black History Month, “Buffalo Soldiers at Vancouver Barracks” will be presented by Staff Sergeant (Retired) Frazier Raymond, United States Army. After the Civil War, during Reconstruction, the United States Army created several regiments of infantry and cavalry composed almost entirely of African American soldiers. These units, known historically as Buffalo Soldiers, served with distinction and honor on the American frontier.

Raymond is a member of the Moses Williams Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers. This group is named after Medal of Honor recipient Moses Williams, who is buried in the Vancouver Barracks Post Cemetery. The presentation on February 18 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. is free to the public and hosted by the Fort Vancouver National Trust at the historic Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row. The event is part of a series of Military History Talks presented by the Vancouver Barracks Military Association.

Artifacts and photos honoring the history of Buffalo Soldiers stationed at Vancouver Barracks will be on display at the Marshall House, which will open that day at 5:30 p.m., to allow the public a chance to view the displays before the presentation, and to visit with some of the current members of the local Buffalo Soldiers Chapter.
