The City of Washougal is inviting the community to celebrate its newest park amenity, the Washougal Bike Park Phase 1 – Skills Course at Hamllik Park, 4285 Addy Street. A grand opening and kids ride party will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

“Our new bike and pump skills course will be a fantastic recreational opportunity for kids and adults and is unique to our area,” said Suzanne Grover, City of Washougal. “We are celebrating the efforts of the community that rallied together to build this skills course, particularly a dozen or so local cyclists, City crew, neighbors of the park, plus Eagle Scouts Tommy Liston and Jaden Moore who used the project to earn merit badges.” The Skills Course project was funded almost exclusively with donated funds and materials. Volunteers have hundreds of hours invested in construction.

“We are excited to show it off to our community and help kids learn how to approach the course safely and also provide an opportunity to check out the safety of their bikes and helmets,” said Ed Fischer of Camas Bikes. Bike Clark County volunteers will set up a bike safety check station to ensure each rider has inflated tires and operational brakes. Bike Clark County will also bring several cases of free helmets for kids without them.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony with thank you to sponsors will be at 2:30 pm. After that, kids will be invited to ride the course and go through a series of activity stations. At 4:15 pm, there will be prizes for completing the activities and fresh baked treats handed out from The Hungry’s Bakery.

“The idea around this event is to have various activity stations where the kids will get a bike check, helmet check, safety class and skills drills, with the feature station riding the different features of the park,” explained Fischer. “Kids will get a little passport that gets a sticker checking off when each station gets completed, then they earn the prize/and or treat when it is completed. It should be fun for everyone!”
