Park the Mower: Alternatives to Lawn.

Because sometimes the grass isn’t always greener…

“Homeowners can learn about low-maintenance, environmentally friendly yards that are alternatives to the traditional lawn during a free workshop on Wednesday, May 4.

“Park the Mower: Alternatives to Lawn” will be 6:30-8 p.m. at the Three Creeks Library, 800-C N.E. Tenney Road.

The workshop is sponsored by Stormwater Partners of SW Washington. Space is limited. To register, go to www.stormwaterpartners.com/informed.html. For more information, call (360) 882-0936 ext. 223.

Vanessa Gardner Nagel of Seasons Garden Design of Vancouver will be the speaker. She will talk about alternative lawn care practices, including drought-resistant plants, use of non-invasive plants, low-mow grasses and pet- and child-friendly options for yards.

Alternative lawn care practices can be easier on the budget and healthier for rivers and streams. Native plants thrive in the right spots and are more resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Eliminating or reducing the use of chemicals makes yards healthier for families and pets, as well as for fish and other stream dwellers.

Stormwater Partners of SW Washington is a consortium involving Clark County and the cities of Battle Ground, Camas, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver and Washougal. The partnership, formed in late 2009, offers neighborhoods and businesses technical information and guidance to maintain private stormwater facilities and protect our streams.
