Salvation Army Prepares for Service Spikes, Enhances Operations

The Salvation Army in Vancouver is continuing to provide vital social services to the greater Clark County community. To ensure the safe delivery of services to neighbors in need, adjustments are being made to limit personal contact and encourage social distancing.

Food Pantry hours are operating as usual Monday – Friday 10:00 am thru 3:00 pm. For the safety and convenience of our guests, groceries will be pre-packed and delivered to the curbside for service in their vehicles. An average of 86 families each day are served in this way. Additionally, they can see individuals with other needs inside while serving them at a safe distance.

“We are working diligently to continue serving our community, with attention to safety for our guests, volunteers, and staff,” said Major Michael Nute, director of The Salvation Army in Vancouver. “We know that our community depends on us, and we expect more people will need our services in the future.”

With an expected spike in requests over the coming weeks, months, and potentially years, ongoing public support will be needed to help ensure that services are available to existing and new vulnerable populations. While all are impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, the one in six Americans who are living in poverty will likely feel the effects quicker and more significantly.

The Salvation Army has stated that they anticipate a significant increase in need of emergency assistance for low-wage employees facing layoffs due to COVID-19. The support they provide – rent/mortgage, utility, food, clothing, and others – will become more urgent as the situation evolves.
