Red Cross Teaches Businesses How to Survive Disaster

A disaster — wildfires, floods, even a 9.0 Cascadia Earthquake – can happen at any time. Everyone should have a plan in place for themselves and their loved ones in case of a disaster; but, did you know your business should have a plan, too? On Wednesday, May 11, 2016 the American Red Cross Cascades Region in partnership with Clark Public Utilities and Kaiser Permanente will host a free Business Leader Resilience Forum to help businesses learn how to prepare for disasters, large and small.

National statistics show that 40 percent of businesses do not reopen after a disaster and another 25 percent fail within one year. There are steps that businesses and nonprofits can take now to ensure their organization can get back up and running quickly if a disaster strikes.

This forum is open to businesses of all sizes and industries, and will cover local hazards and business resilience issues. Attendees will be provided tools and resources to assess their disaster readiness, plan for disasters and engage employees in the readiness and recovery process.

Presentation attendees will hear directly from top business leaders to learn the steps they’re taking to plan for emergencies as well as the tools available to engage employees, assess readiness and strengthen business resilience. Panel speakers include: Amy Shlossman – Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross Cascades Region; Dan Krebs – Director of Operations, Clark Public Utilities; Kelley Okolita – Director of Disaster Management Services, Cambia Health Solutions; Scott Burns, Ph.D. – Geology Department, Portland State University; and Tripp Robinson – Emergency Manager, Intel.

The Business Leader Resilience Forum will take place at Clark Public Utilities (1200 Fort Vancouver Way) from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.
