September 11, 2001.

Do you remember what you were doing the morning of September 11, 2001? I remember exactly what I was doing, although that doesn’t matter.  What we should remember is that today, September 11, is National Patriot Day.

On September 11, 2001, two hijacked civilian aircraft crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. A third hijacked aircraft crashed into the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. And a forth hijacked aircraft crashed in southwestern Pennsylvania after passengers tried to take control of the aircraft in order to prevent the hijackers from crashing the aircraft into an important symbol of democracy and freedom. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives in this tragedy.

In memory of the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America, President Bush designated September 11 as Patriot Day.  A day of observance and ceremony. A day of the flag of the United States of America flying at half staff. A moment of silence.

There will be a community gathering at 8 am on September 11 at the Vancouver Landing (100 Columbia St, just West of the Quay).  There will be a formal posting of the colors, tolling of the bell, moment of silence, and comments by Mayor Pollard.  The 30 minute ceremony is free and open to the public.
