Legacy Employees Knock Socks off Giving Goal

hey! sharing is caring :)

Legacy Health has far surpassed its goal of collecting 10,000 pairs of new socks to help those in need in local communities. In fact, the final tally of the early winter employee sock drive is 30,613 pairs of new socks, triple the company-wide goal of 10,000 pairs of new socks. It means thousands of homeless or struggling individuals in the Portland-Vancouver region will have warmer feet during this wet, cold winter.

Here is southwest Washington, Legacy Salmon Creek brought in 3,742 pairs, tripling its goal of 1,250.

Some of the socks will stay at Legacy’s own community closets and emergency departments to serve patients who are homeless or in need of socks. The rest will be divided among ten charitable community partners who work with the homeless, including Share of Vancouver.

The sock drive was part of a new strategy for Legacy to focus its energies and impact toward helping alleviate serious community problems. It began last spring with a system-wide food drive that generated 21 tons of food for eleven community food banks (four times its goal).

The sock drive’s initial goal represented one pair of socks per employee. Exceeding that goal by a three-to-one margin has demonstrated both the effectiveness of these new focused community programs and the compassion and generosity of Legacy employees.

Experts say the average homeless person walks about 10 miles a day. And our wet, cold winters can land those without socks in the Emergency Room with blisters, frostbite or lesions. Legacy’s donations will make a big difference to those living outside and those who are on limited incomes.
