“She is an inspiration to staff and a mentor for her students.”
Making an impact and inspiring those around you, those are some of the traits of a quality educator. And that, and much more, is what heard about Jodi Buchanan, Art Teacher at Alki Middle School, who was selected as the winner of the March, 2019, TwinStar Credit Union/ ClarkCountyLive Teacher Appreciation Grant. She was selected from entries submitted throughout Clark County. (you can submit a teacher nomination here.)
Ms. Buchanan was nominated by Principal Darci Fronk, who said, “Jodi is an amazing art teacher. She works with more than 150 students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to develop concepts through hands-on activities. She is always looking for new ways to challenge students and have them reflect on their experiences through writing, as well as incorporating reading into her lessons.”
And some of those concepts were readily on display, as Ms. Fronk stated, “She brings out the best in students, and is always excited to create displays to show off her students’ work. There is always artwork displayed throughout the halls and spaces at Alki.” Kids love to see their efforts appreciated.
What we found amazing was that Ms. Buchanan had been teaching for more than 30 years. In fact, Ms. Fronk mentioned, “After teaching over 30 years, she still takes advantage of every professional development opportunity she can find. In addition to all the work she does to create meaningful learning experiences for students in her classroom, she also coaches after school sports.”
(Full disclosure: while winning teachers are selected via a random drawing of nominations submitted from the schools, two of my three kids actually had Ms. Buchanan while attending either elementary or middle school. Small world.) :)
At our award presentation, it was obvious the kids appreciated Ms. Buchanan, as she received rousing applause from the class when she was announced as the winner. It was great to have the opportunity to recognize her, and financially contribute towards her good works in the classroom.
The goal of the TwinStar Credit Union/ ClarkCountyLive.com Teacher Appreciation Program is two-fold; to provide an outlet to recognize the outstanding works and unselfish actions taken by teachers in their classrooms, and to financially assist these teachers to continue these admirable efforts on behalf of the children in our community.
Congratulations to Jodi Buchanan, and all the staff and students of Alki Middle School, on this well-deserved award.

Is there a deserving teacher in your school? Of course there is!
Tell us about it. The Teacher Appreciation Program grant is awarded each month to a deserving local teacher whose name has been submitted by the school’s Administrative staff, PTA Board/Members, or other members of the school community.
IMPORTANT CHANGE: NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN TO BE MADE BY ANY COMMUNITY MEMBER. We’ve extended the nominating process from being only admins and PTA’s to all community members. So nominate a deserving teacher, maybe they can win the Grant.
Thank you to our sponsors of the Teacher Appreciation Program.
