Share Vancouver Annual Sock Drive.

With the cold, wet, Pacific Northwest Fall and Winter upon us, Share Vancouver is holding its Sixth Annual “Operation Sole Mates” Sock Drive during the month of October.

Clean socks are a staple of health care. Rain-soaked feet, ill-fitting shoes, constant standing and disease all take their toll on the feet of homeless people. One of the most basic ways to keep feet healthy is to keep them warm and dry – a sometimes daunting task if you spend your days outside.

“Our need for socks and underwear is constant and it gives our Share Outreach staff an opportunity to reach out and help in a positive way,” says Katherine Garrett, Director of Share House and Share Outreach. “So often we see street homeless asking for spare change or food, but we feel this is a much more productive way to raise awareness, help address their needs and, hopefully, move them into shelter.”

Donations of new, athletic socks for men and women, as well as underwear, can be dropped off throughout the month of October at the Share Fromhold Service Center, 2306 NE Andresen Road (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or at one of the following shelter locations: Share House, 1115 W 13th St.; Share Homestead, 4921 NE Hazel Dell Ave.; Share Orchards Inn, 5609 NE 102nd Ave.

Visit Share Vancouver online or call 360-896-2130 for more information.
