Hand sanitizers were developed for those times when soap and water are not available. They are gels that contain alcohol in order to kill the germs present on the skin.
If you use hand sanitizer, you should check to make sure it’s safe to use, and not actually harmful to your health. The Food and Drug Administration continues to see an increasing number of adverse events, including blindness, cardiac effects, effects on the central nervous system, and hospitalizations and death, due to hand sanitizers contaminated with methanol (or wood alcohol).
The Food and Drug Administration expanded its list of hand sanitizers with methanol contamination this week and 87 different hand sanitizers now being recalled because they’ve tested positive for the toxic chemical.
