Green Named ESD 112 Employee of Year

green_esd112_200An Evergreen Public Schools employee has been named 2016 Classified School Employee of the Year for the Educational Service District (ESD) 112 region. The award is given by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and recognizes an outstanding classified school employee in each ESD region of the state.

Melanie Green, this year’s recipient, supervises the district’s ten Family Resource Centers (FCRCs). Green is both personally and professionally involved with the district’s FCRCs, having built the first one from the ground up.

Family Resource Centers support families directly and through partnerships that provide access to basic needs and other services. These centers help improve student achievement and encourage family engagement. Evergreen’s FCRCs have food pantries, clothing closets and school supplies and in the 2014-15 school year served more than 650 families.

According to Green’s supervisor Cynthia Christensen, this successful program would not exist without Green’s contributions. “She built the initial Resource Center into something the district would get behind and agree to expand. It has been through her direction that the additional Resource Centers are flourishing,” said Christensen.

Described as a dedicated and dynamic community leader, Melanie has put in place several highly successful programs for students and families. She developed several adult/student mentoring programs, among them a community lunch buddies program, a Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, and a Kids’ Club after school homework/activity club, and others.

According to Orchards Elementary School Counselor Beverly Kessler, “Melanie Green is an inspiration to all who work with her. She is an outstanding candidate to receive the Washington Classified School Employee of the Year Award.”

Green will be recognized along with honorees from other regions of the state by Superintendent Randy Dorn later this spring. Green’s application will be forwarded to the state level for consideration for the Washington State Classified Employee of the Year award.
