Each year PeaceHealth of Southwest Washington and the Quinn Driscoll Foundation host a FREE Teen Heart Screening Event. This year’s event is set to take place on Saturday, February 23rd from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, Firstenburg Tower Lobby (400 Mother Joseph Place).

Even if your teen appears to be perfectly healthy, there could be an undetected heart defect waiting to wreak havoc. These teens are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest – especially if they are athletes.

Young Champions Heart Screening uses an echocardiogram, aka, ultrasound of the heart, as well as an EKG to detect heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), of which is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in teen athletes. This condition occurs in about one in 500 people. In the United States, one in every three days a teen dies due to sudden cardiac arrest in organized youth sports.

Who is eligible? Any middle school or high school student-athlete, band member or cheerleader whose age is 12 to 18 years old. Although the screening is designed for student-athletes, all children in the age group who may be at risk can be accommodated.

The screening is free, however, a $25 donation (payable to the Quinn Driscoll Foundation) is recommended and much appreciated. Registration is required. Visit PeaceHealth online to register today.
