Upon their return from the Vietnam War, many men and women were not given a very “welcoming” Welcome Home. A ceremony honoring and recognizing all Vietnam and Vietnam-Era Veterans will be held on March 23, 2019, at Vancouver Mall from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Several local non-profit groups are sponsoring the Third Annual Commemoration of Vietnam Veterans ceremony. Vietnam War and Vietnam era veterans are those that served in our armed forces, in any location, from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975. In addition, all Veterans are invited and will be appreciated.

“This yearly event commemorates the devotion, loyalty, and sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families. The beauty of the celebration and honor days is that we Americans acknowledge and honor the thousands of men and women who may have denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago,” said event organizer, J. Ron Powers. “We hope to offer them recognition, encouragement, and appreciation.”

The first year of the commemoration was attended by about 75 veterans, and the second year was attended by more than 200. With more than 10,000 Vietnam War and Vietnam era veterans in Clark County, and many others throughout the Pacific Northwest, Powers says he hopes even more will attend this year.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is Thursday, March 29. Additionally, the Washington State Legislature passed HB 1319 in 2013 making March 30 of each year ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day’. On this day all state and local public entities are required to fly the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag at their main building.
