Summer’s End Promenade at Fort Vancouver

September 29, 2018 @ 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

While the official end of summer may already be here, you can still celebrate at the annual Summer’s End Promenade on Saturday, September 29th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

This will also be a celebration of National Public Lands Day, the largest volunteer day on public lands in our country. The day brings volunteers from around the country together to improve and restore public lands and facilities used for recreation, education, exercise, and enjoyment. This is also one of the “fee-free” days by the National Park Service.

To celebrate, National Park Service Volunteers-in-Parks of all ages will dress to match the periods over the past 110 years in the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and the Vancouver National Historic Reserve. The volunteers will walk along Officers’ Row and the national park’s historic Parade Ground. They will stop and mingle at the Grant House as well.

Visitors are invited to walk among the volunteers, stop, ask questions, and have conversations with them about what and when they are representing. The volunteers in the park’s Costume and Textile Department will also be out to answer questions about how the costumes were made and their style. Taking photographs is encouraged.

The annual Promenade is a celebration of dedication and commitment from numerous volunteers who make and manage the “largest historic costume collection in the National Park Service”, according to Eileen Trestain, Volunteer/Coordinator of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Costume and Textile Department. The detail and care that goes into producing the costumes is tremendous.

Bring the family, enjoy the grounds, and learn some of the Park’s history. This event only happens once a year, and with it being the centennial of the end of World War I, special detail has gone into the costumes representing the past 100 years.
