Flag Day Ceremony at Vancouver Barracks Bandstand.
We will join other communities across our nation for a simultaneous recital of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Annual Pause for the Pledge will be led by two of our local young men who have been accepted into military academies; David Baker, from Columbia River High School, will attend the Merchant Marine Academy, and Michael Madrid, from Prairie High School, will attend the Naval Academy.
Fifth grade students from Marshall Elementary will speak about the meaning of the flag from the perspective of Colonial-era citizens, and will also be on hand to judge a Patriotic Tie Contest from among Clark Counties’ Mayors.
Prairie High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present colors and perform with their rifle squad. Vocal soloist Kyra Smith, from Mountain View High School, and the Columbia River Chorus of the Sweet Adelines International will be entertaining us with music.
Master of Ceremonies will be Scott Simon, KUPL radio morning show; with remarks by 2009 Marshall Public Leadership Award recipient Phillip Haberthur, 2010 Marshall Youth Leadership Award recipient Lindsey Elhart and Melissa Sandvold, representing event sponsor Veolia Water.
Complimentary pizza provided by Papa Murphy’s, snacks from Trader Joes and Frito Lay, and coffee and water courtesy of American Red Cross.
