Rebecca Skloot, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, will be the featured speaker at Fort Vancouver Regional Library (FVRL) Foundation’s annual Authors and Illustrators Dinner and Silent Auction on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at the Hilton Vancouver, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks has been translated into more than 25 languages, was made into an HBO movie starring Oprah Winfrey, and was featured as a best book of 2010 by more than 60 media outlets, including Amazon’s Best Book of the Year, National Public Radio Best of the Bestsellers, Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, and many others.

Tickets to the Authors and Illustrators Dinner and Silent Auction, FVRL Foundation’s signature fundraiser, are $85 each, and tables for 10 are available for $850. There are also a limited number of tickets available for a private reception with Skloot for $50 per person. Tickets for the event can be purchased through FVRL Foundation’s website (fvrlfoundation.org).

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks reveals the history of a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks whose cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951. Known to scientists as HeLa, these cells became one of the most ground-breaking tools in science and medicine, instrumental in cancer research, developing the polio vaccine, AIDS research, gene mapping, virus research, in vitro fertilization, and much more. Henrietta’s cells have been sold by the billions, yet her contributions to science were mostly unknown to the world (including her own family) until Rebecca Skloot uncovered her story. Since it was published in 2010, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks has sold more than 2.5 million copies and spent over 75 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, but its total impact is immeasurable.

Rebecca Skloot’s award-winning science writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; Discover; and many other publications. She is currently working on a new book about humans, animals, science, and ethics. Skloot is the founder and president of The Henrietta Lacks Foundation, which helps individuals who have made important contributions to scientific research without personally benefiting from those contributions.

Proceeds from the Authors & Illustrators Dinner & Silent Auction will be used to support FVRL District’s programs and services, including Summer Learning, Grow a Reader early learning program, and a variety of STEM-based programs.
