Second Saturdays in Vancouver

Hands On at the Water Center.

Who doesn’t like playing in water?

Events at the Water Resources Education Center in Vancouver are designed for hands on fun for the whole family. When you visit the Water Center, you’ll experience a variety of exhibits, events and interactive educational programs designed to teach us how to be better stewards. But, the best part is..it’s fun!

Second Saturdays at the Water Resources Education Center are not only fun, they’re free! Each second Saturday of the month, from 1 to 3 p.m., kids and their families are invited to explore a different topic through hands-on activities, games and stories. Create bird feeders and other crafts to welcome wildlife to your backyard! Learn about the amazing world of bubbles! Make a piece of art from reused materials! There’s always something new waiting at Second Saturdays!

May 14, 2011: Birds. They waddle, they swim, they fly and much more. Come and do activities that will show some bird adaptations. Why do some birds have long legs and long necks?

June 11, 2011: National Get Outdoors Day. The Water Center is the site for this year’s National Get Outdoors Day. Meet Smokey Bear and Ranger Rick and learn about fun things you can do outside.

July 9, 2011: Bugs. Some crawl, some fly, some are pretty, some are pests, some have wings and some even help plants. They are bugs. Come do fun activities about bugs and look around the garden to see if you can find any.

August 13, 2011: Natural Disasters. Volcanoes, tornadoes, earthquakes are just a few. Do you know what they are? And what should you do if you were in one? This Second Saturday will have demonstrations about these and other natural disasters.

September 10, 2011: Columbia Flyaway Show. This Second Saturday is part of the wood carvers annual show. Children can paint little wooden birds or color different types of birds and do a bird-related activity. Everyone is encouraged to go upstairs and see the wood carvings.

October 8, 2011: Gardens in the Fall. Did you know that gardens love the fall? There are bulbs to plant, leaves to mulch and put around plants, and fun things to do with those vegetables you harvest.

November 12, 2011: American Indian Heritage Month. Observe American Indian Heritage Month at the Water Center with crafts and activities.

December 10, 2011: Nature and Recycled Arts. Make arts and crafts using items from nature and reusable items from around you house. Come and make fun works of art.
