Puppets, Princesses, Authors and Illustrators Help Celebrate.

What better place to have a party than at a toy store! Join the fun at Kazoodles Toy Store (13503 SE Mill Plain, #B-3, Vancouver) on Saturday, March 10, 2012 between 9:30am and 7:00pm for a special birthday party!

“Kazoodles toy store will celebrate its sixth birthday Saturday, March 10, featuring local authors and illustrators. A read-in in the book section will benefit the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

Games, crafts, prizes, face painting, balloon animals and a costumed princess also are on the birthday docket at the store, 13503 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd. in Vancouver. Kazoodles is open 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Camas Police Officer Tim Dickerson will read his book, “Napping With Daddy,” and talk about writing it, from 10 to 11 a.m. The book was illustrated by former Camas art teacher Amy Barnes.

“Loowit’s Legend,” a recently published retelling of the Indian story of the Columbia River Gorge, was illustrated by Diana Thewlis of Vancouver. Beginning at 11 a.m. she will read the book and describe the process of creating the watercolor illustrations. Written by Erin K. O’Connell, “Loowit’s Legend” comes from Parallel45 Publishing in Hood River, Ore.

Aron Nels Steinke, who grew up in Clark County and teaches elementary school in Portland, will arrive at 1 p.m. to share two of his Balloon Toons books, “The Super Crazy Cat Dance” and “The Super-Duper Dog Park.” Both are published by Blue Apple Books. Steinke studied hand-drawn animation before gravitating toward comics.

The authors and illustrators are part of a read-in that gives kids a jump start on Kazoodles’ annual summer reading program, where kids are rewarded for their reading by getting to choose blankets for cats at the Humane Society. The blankets are knitted or crocheted by volunteers.

Portland’s Dragon Theater Puppets and Princesses will be on hand from 2 to 4 p.m. for face painting, balloon animals and a princess appearance.
Kazoodles is a local, independent business owned by Bob and Mary Sisson. All the birthday party events are free, though Dragon Theater will have a tip jar out.”
