Columbia Springs | 2014 Fall Family Field Trip Day

On October 25th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Columbia Springs will be hosting a full day of activities for the whole family. The Fall Family Field Trip Day provides the opportunity for experience new things, learn about nature and spend time as a family, unplugged and not in front of the TV.

You can check out the owl pellet dissections, nature activity tent, animal skulls, mushroom hikes, and so much more. Enjoy hands-on environmental science activities at our 100-acre natural area that you can’t find anywhere else. Some activities are on-going, others are scheduled to occur throughout the day.


Columbia Springs is located at 12208 SE Evergreen Highway in Vancouver, WA. Walk-in’s are welcome but registration is encouraged. Click here to learn more and register.

 

Family Field Trip Day Activity Schedule:

Hands on Nature Activity Tent – On-going

Visit the activity tent to check out animal skulls, make a backpack monster, create a bird window decoration, color a stream scene, and explore natural objects using only your sense of touch!

Grow Your Own Indoor Garden – On-going

Want to keep gardening during the cool season? Plant your own mini garden of microgreens and enjoy some delicious and nutritious smoothies. This activity is brought to you by the power of compost!

Fall Frenzy – On-going

Fall is a busy time of year, especially for wildlife!  Do you have what it takes to prepare for the long winter?   Find out by playing fun nature games!

Photos with Frank the Fish – On-going

Choose some fun props and say “cheese” when you have your photo taken with our mascot, Frank the Fish! Photos will be posted to the Columbia Springs Facebook page for you to share with family and friends.

The Woods in Winter – 30-minute hikes, starting at 10:40 am, 11:20 am, 12:00 pm, and  1:00 pm

During the winter the forest seems much different than it does in spring and summer. Learn winter season secrets of the forest on this guided hike including how birds migrate, how to identify deciduous trees by their twigs, and more. Up to 15 people per hike.

Fungi & Foraging! – 30-minute hikes starting at 10:45 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 am, 1:30 pm

Did you know that the average fungus is the size of a football field? Learn about fascinating fungi and edible forage foods of the Pacific Northwest as you take a short guided hike through the beautiful trails of Columbia Springs. Up to 15 people per hike.

Amazing Owls – 30-minute activities starting at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, and 1:30 pm

Learn about one of our most interesting native predators in a very unique way: dissect an owl pellet! An owl pellet holds many secrets to the life of an owl, including where it lived and what it had for dinner. What will you find in your owl pellet? Up to 20 people per session.
